Matthew Judon Trade

Matthew Judon Traded to Atlanta Falcons

New England Patriots Send Pass Rusher to Atlanta for 2025 Third-Round Pick

Judon Departs After Expressing Disappointment Over Lack of Contract Extension

In a move that shook up the NFL offseason, the New England Patriots have traded four-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Matthew Judon to the Atlanta Falcons for a 2025 third-round pick.

Judon had been vocal about his desire for a contract extension all offseason, even holding out of training camp in search of a new deal.

However, the Patriots were unwilling to meet Judon's demands, and the two sides ultimately agreed to part ways.

Judon's departure leaves a significant hole in the Patriots' defense, but head coach Jerod Mayo believes the trade is the best thing for everyone involved.

"We appreciate everything Matthew has done for the Patriots during his time here," Mayo said in a statement. "He is a great player and a great person, and we wish him all the best in Atlanta."

Judon is expected to play a major role for the Falcons' defense in 2023.

He will join a talented unit that already includes Grady Jarrett and Arnold Ebiketie.

The Patriots, meanwhile, will need to find a replacement for Judon in their starting lineup.

Several options could fill the void, including Deatrich Wise Jr. and Ronnie Perkins.

The Patriots also could look to the draft to add a pass rusher.
